Triumph and tragedy greeted the new season Saturday night at Willamette Speedway.

Brett McCutcheon of Sweet Home scored the A-Main event victory after 10 laps in the Outlaw Late Model class when the race was cut short after a bad wreck involving four-time defending track champion Trevor Glaser of Tangent.

Polesitting Bob Boyd of Albany took the initial lead and McCutcheon followed him into second on the start.

The quick-timing bunch of Rob Mayea, Rick Wyatt, Cody Sell, Jeremy Shank and Glaser were dicing with one another while making their way through the field to the front.

While coming out of the fourth turn to complete the 11th lap, Boyd's engine, which had been smoking since the early stages of the main event, finally gave up. McCutcheon nudged the slowing Boyd, and Boyd rolled to a stop just past the flagstand on the front stretch.

While the first handful of cars made their way past Boyd safely, Glaser got turned and his car hit Boyd's on his driver's side at almost the same time as Shanks T-boned Glaser.

The race was red-flagged and it took nearly an hour to extricate Glaser from his car as he had a severely broken left arm from the impact. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After about a half hour of red flag, track officials decided to end the race. Because of the red flag on the track, the scoring reverted to the prior lap with Boyd being sent to the back for causing the red flag.

That gave McCutcheon the win with Darren Coffell of Bend in second, Todd Sieg of Lebanon in third, Mayea in fourth and Wyatt in fifth. Shank was credited with seventh place with Glaser getting eighth place.

Jimmy Schram of Vancouver, Wash., won the B-Main event, passing Robert Hoefs on the outside on the 16th of 30 laps for the win. Randy Boyd finished second followed by Bruce Hipple, Steve Moore and Todd Shandy.

During a red-flag period 10 laps into the race, a rabbit found its way onto the backstretch and ran into turn three and the restart had to be held off while the rabbit was chased off the track.

Mark Carroll of Redmond put on an impressive drive to win the modified main event. Carroll took the lead from the outside pole position and started to drive away from the field, but fast-timer and three-time defending class champion Mayea worked his way through the field.

As the race was running late, a green-white-checkered finish was ordered. Carroll put on a perfect restart while Mayea went wide and fell back. Carroll took the win with Mayea in second, Dale Holland of Portland in third, and Sandy Sanders of Junction City in fourth.

Thomas Hunziker of Bend took the lead on the last corner of the last lap to win the Super Sport A-Main event. Polesitting Brett James of Albany led the race from the start. Attrition cut down the field to five cars and following a red flag on lap 19, a green-white-checkered finish was determined the best course of action.

James got away on the restart with Hunziker and defending class champion Russ Sell in third. Coming out of the fourth corner coming to the checkered flag James sent wide enough coming to the front stretch, allowing Hunziker enough room to rocket by for the win. James finished second with Sell in third and Mark Thompson in fourth.

Wyatt won the Super Sport B-Main event.

David Cronk made a quick dash to the front to win the Sportsman A-Main event and Bill Allison won the Sportsman B-Main.

Dave Kingsberry of Lebanon won the Classic Sportsman A-Main event with Eric Jarnport of Monmouth in second and Carrie Campbell in third.

The Willamette Speedway season continues Saturday, April 18, with all five regular classes in competition.
