The recently completed soccer field at Lacomb School will see its first game action on Oct. 31.

An American Youth Soccer Organization tournament will break in the new field, said Andrew Mason, AYSO board member and Lebanon's representative.

About 100 boys and girls will take part in two divisions - U12 and U14.

Mason was the one who brought AYSO into Lebanon a couple of years ago.

"There were just no sports for kids in middle school and I got in touch with (Keith Underdahl) and it just took off from there," Mason said.

Underdahl is the regional commissioner for AYSO Region 870, based in Albany.

About 220 kids ages 5-19 have joined so far.

Right now Lebanon is a part of the Albany chapter but it's likely it will form its own region sometime next year, Mason said.

"I'm a big soccer guy so I'm trying to push it," Mason said. "It's just taken off and it's great to see."

The Army National Guard took on the project of renovating the field this past summer.

The field was not level and in bad condition. Members of the National Guard used it as an opportunity to give soldiers experience using heavy equipment, skills they would need in the field.

Up until this point, the field was not ready to use. But now it's ready to go.

"It's looking great," Mason said. "Everybody wants to see it. By springtime we'll be playing on it full time."

The games will begin at 9 a.m. and end in the early afternoon. An awards ceremony will be held following the action around 2 or 2:30 p.m.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each of the four divisions, Mason said.

Mason said the project has had several key volunteers, including Lori Shafer, Scott Bruslind, Jennifer Meckley and Steve Wolfe, who donated all the irrigation equipment.

This event marks the end of the AYSO fall season. The spring season begins with practices next march and the first set of games in April.
