Well that was a bit unexpected.
Crescent Valley came into Thursday's Mid-Willamette Conference game at Lebanon averaging 43 points through its first five games.
Lebanon wasn't far behind with a 27.4 point average.
But the matchup of the two undefeated teams in the MWC on Oct. 8 turned into a defensive battle, with the Raiders edging the Warriors 7-6.
"It was just a great high school game," said Lebanon coach Rob Allen. "I can't ask for any more out of our guys."
Crescent Valley scored its lone touchdown with 9:26 left in the second quarter when Grant Mattes found the endzone on an 11-yard run.
Lebanon answered with less than a minute left before halftime. Quarterback L.T. Avants found Dalton Urrutia on a 27-yard touchdown pass.
The extra point was missed in what turned out to be the difference in the game.
Both teams went scoreless in the second half.
"Defensively I was really happy with the way we played," Allen said. "Offensively, we just couldn't get our rhythm going."
Lebanon had a chance to score a game-winning touchdown, but Avants pass to Urrutia fell incomplete late in the game.
Tance Privratsky led the Warriors with 91 yards rushing on 12 carries. Avants added 32 yards on 10 carries.
Crescent Valley had some success running the ball, but were unable to capitalize on opportunities.
Andrew Olgesby led the Raiders with 152 yards on 33 carries.
Allen said he was pleased with the way the Warriors defense played in the redzone.
He said defensive ends Cameron Thompson and Alex Patterson and linebacker Jerred Nelson played extraordinarily well for Lebanon.
Nelson led the team with 13 tackles.
Lebanon fell to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. CV is 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the MWC.
Next up is a game at MWC powerhouse West Albany at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The Bulldogs beat Dallas 48-7 last Thursday.
"It doesn't get any easier from here," Allen said of the Bulldogs, who will be playing their homecoming game Friday. "They're playing extremely well right now. We're hoping to execute and continue to get better in all aspects of the game."
