Bulldogs earn first MWC win in four years
It would have been hard to predict that Woodburn would end its four-year Mid-Willamette Conference winless streak against a team playing good football.
But that's just what happened.
The Bulldogs scored 20 fourth-quarter points to bust open a close game and beat visiting Lebanon 33-21 on Oct. 23.
"We got a little tired at the end and they got some momentum going," Lebanon coach Rob Allen said. "The guys feel pretty bad about it. They let it get away from them."
Coming off wins against South Albany and Corvallis and competitive games against Crescent Valley and West Albany, the Warriors came into the game against Woodburn with confidence.
They left with the sight of Woodburn celebrating its first conference win since joining the MWC four years ago.
Nevin Blem had a lot to do with it.
Blem ran for 222 yards on 31 carries and accounted for four of Woodburn's five touchdowns, all coming in the second half.
"He carried the ball quite a few times and just kept pushing, pushing and pushing and broke through on a couple big runs," Allen said.
Lebanon had control in the first half.
Josiah Olson opened the scoring with an 8-yard run in the second quarter.
Woodburn responded when Pedro Sandoval scored from seven yards out to knot the game at 7.
Lebanon held a 14-7 lead at the half, thanks to Adam Colwell, who scored on an 11-yard run in the second quarter.
The second half belonged to the Bulldogs.
Blem threw a 15-yard pass to Andy Avgi to bring the Bulldogs to within 14-13. That was the only score in the third quarter.
Blem then scored on touchdown runs of two and 62 yards in the fourth quarter that put Woodburn on top 27-14.
Colwell later scored from six yards out to bring the score to 27-21 but Blem put it away with a 2-yard run late in the fourth.
"I think it was a combination of things," Allen said. "They picked up some of their guys that were sick and hurt and we had some guys that were out."
Lebanon's starting quarterback, L.T. Avants, missed the game due to a sore shoulder.
He was replaced by Colton Scavone, who converted 4 of 11 passes for 56 yards and two interceptions. Scavone also lost a fumble.
Due to some of the injuries and illnesses, Lebanon ran out of gas late in the game, Allen said.
"We had several guys that had to play every down," he said.
Colwell led the way offensively for the Warriors, running 17 times for 121 yards. Olson added six carries for 36 yards and Dalton Urrutia chipped in with a 41-yard run.
Alex Patterson had 11 tackles and Jerred Nelson added nine to guide the Warriors defensively.
Lebanon's playoff hopes are not lost.
The Warriors fell to 2-3 in the MWC. CV (5-0) and West Albany (5-0) are guaranteed one of the four playoff spots.
Corvallis (3-2) and South Albany (3-2) are both one game ahead of Lebanon, but the Warriors hold tiebreakers over both teams.
If Lebanon wins both remaining games, against Silverton (0-5) on Friday and at Dallas (1-4) on Nov. 6, they'll likely capture the third or fourth seed.
The Warriors are focused on Friday's game, which is their homecoming game.
"I don't know how they haven't won a league game yet," Allen said of Silverton. "They have some skilled kids."
Avants is not expected to return, but is looking to play the following week against Dallas.
Friday's game starts at 7 p.m.
