Rep. Sherrie Sprenger (R-Scio) has been named vice chair of the House Education Committee for the 75th Oregon Legislative assembly, which begins Jan. 12. Sprenger also will play a key role in any tax legislation as a member of the Revenue Committee.
Sprenger was appointed to the District 17 seat at the beginning of last February's special session to replace Fred Girod. She served as a member of the Education Committee before winning a full two-year term in the Nov. 4 election.
As a former chair of the Lebanon School Board, Sprenger said she will use her experience on education policy to improve student performance and achievement.
"All Oregon students deserve high expectations and resources to be successful," Sprenger said. "As vice chair, I'll push for accountability and higher standards for our state school system. I'll work with Republicans and Democrats to seek solutions that better prepare our kids for higher education and 21st Century jobs."
As a member of the Revenue Committee, Sprenger said she'll carry the message from her constituents to Salem to stand firm against any new taxes.
"Despite a budget deficit caused by overspending, Oregon is expected to receive nearly $1 billion in new revenue," she said. "Just like families with their budgets, we need to make the tough decisions and fund priorities within existing resources."
