The Willamette Valley Concert Band will perform "Sousa Spectacular," a free concert, at 7 p.m. on May 25 in the Lasells Stewart Center at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
The concert will feature a wide variety of music chosen for Memorial Day, with a number of works by John Philip Sousa.
Donations will be accepted at the concert, and will be used to award scholarships to area middle school and high school band members who want to attend summer band camps.
Also featured will be the choral group, RebelSingers, from South Albany High School, led by choir director Brett DeYoung. The group will perform two short selections by themselves: "Solfege A La Sousa," by Ken Berg, and "Worthy To Be Praised," by Byron Smith.
In addition, they will join with the band for three selections: "America the Beautiful," arranged by Carmen Dragon; "Twentiana," arranged by Hawley Ades, a medley of popular American tunes from the 1920s; and "Oregon, My Oregon," as arranged by University of Oregon Professor Harold Owen for choir and brass quintet.
This selection is in celebration of the Oregon Sesquicentennial. The audience will be invited to sing along for the last verse of this piece.
