To the editor:
I went to a meeting last night at Lebanon High School. Parents, students, teachers and other members of the community were there to discuss why 47 percent of the students taking Algebra 1 are failing/have failed the class. Algebra 1 is a required course.
These kids are receiving no help from the math teachers to understand how to do the problems. These kids are taking additional classes at the local community college, hiring tutors and leaving Lebanon High to enroll in surrounding school districts. This school has an approximate enrollment of 1,350 students - nearly half are failing this math class. This has a direct impact on the Senior class this year and probably in year(s) past - and in the future.
The principal oversaw the meeting, at least he was present. A "facilitator" ran the meeting. He had no answers to any questions when asked by the audience. The principal offered no answers to any questions, just simply suggested having another meeting. That was the purpose of this meeting!
Students were asking questions and received only "the councilors have a one hour wait outside their doors, you need to schedule a time to see your councilor."
A teacher, Mr. Helland, stood and stated he did not grade any of his assignments. He also stated if the student has problems with any math they bring it to him and he helps them. If the assignments aren't graded how does the student know they have a problem?
Much frustration arose from last night. Mr. Helland walked out of the meeting shaking his head at the parents, totally unaware it is he that is the problem and other teachers like him that just don't teach anymore. This is called tenure.
If these kids don't receive help, and now, we will have more than one generation graduating - or dropping out - without skills necessary for any kind of future except one of crime.
I saw not one reason compelling me to vote for any future school bond measures.
