Gavin L. Smith, 86, of Lebanon, died at his home on Oct. 24, 2009.
A memorial service was held Nov. 3 at the Riverside Christian Church in Sweet Home.
He was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Cottage Grove, the son of Oscar and Annie (Williams) Smith. He grew up in Glendale.
Mr. Smith worked as a timber faller for the Civilian Conservation Corps, then served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II.
He married Alonia Smith in Reno, Nev., on June 24, 1947.
After his honorable discharge, he returned to Southern Oregon and lived in Glendale and Canyonville. He later moved to the mid- Willamette Valley, living in the Sweet Home, Scio and Lebanon area.
He worked in the timber industry in many parts of Oregon and Alaska. He retired from North Santiam Sand and Gravel in Stayton in the late 1970s. After his retirement, he and his wife served as camp hosts at Green Peter Reservoir for the Linn County Department of Parks and Recreation for five years.
He is survived by his wife Alonia of Lebanon; daughters Dixie Belveal of Lebanon and Lori Smith of Corvallis; sister Evelyn Wunsch of Grants Pass;and granddaughters Corrie and Cassie Belveal.
