From childhood through parenthood, Halloween brings happy memories of trick-or-treating.
A few prominent people around town were asked to share some of their favorites.
Bo Yates, Lebanon High School principal:
"Probably the first time I took my oldest son trick-or-treating is by far my best memory. He kept pointing to the (full) moon and saying, 'Moon.'"
Yates favorite costume was when his youngest son dressed as the Incredible Hulk, though he said last year he and his wife dressed as an LHS coach and cheerleader for a party. Yates was the coach.
Mike Healy, Lebanon Police chief:
"The various costumes were fun, and being out with friends, doing the whole trick-or-treating thing when I was a kid, and taking my kids around was a blast. It was a chance to say hi to neighbors."
His favorite costume is when his son was a pirate and his daughter was a pumpkin.
"It's been a favorite photo for years," he said.
Denice Lee, Lebanon Public Library manager:
"When we were growing up, we were very poor. My mom made us a little Halloween bag out of a lunch sack. I didn't know what we were going to do for a costume. My mom took a sheet and split it, did eye holes for my brother and one for me. We were ghosts for Halloween. That was my first experience being in a costume. You could be out doing things and people didn't know who it was."
Lee said she was about 5 at the time.
Her favorite costume was a pink ballerina tutu her mother made her.
John Hitt, Lebanon city manager:
"Every year the big deal at my house at Halloween was to go to Mr. and Mrs. Huff's; they were an older couple who didn't have any children. They were the big deal in the neighborhood because they always gave the best candy and the big candy bars. It was a race to get to the Huff's house first; you didn't want to be there too late to miss out on the Huff candy."
Hitt said a full-sized candy bar used to be a nickel, and the Huffs used to give out the 10-cent sized candy bar.
"They were huge," Hitt said.
He remembers a cowboy outfit he wore when he was very young.
Emily King, 2009 Strawberry Festival queen:
"One of my favorite Halloween memories is from elementary school. At Green Acres we would all put on our costumes. The P.A. system would start playing 'Monster Mash' and each class would walk all throughout the school showing off their costumes. After that, the kindergarten class would walk to a nearby old folk's home and show them their costumes. I remember loving to see everyone's outfits, and picking my favorites."
King said she had many good costumes, but especially liked when she and Maddy Phillips dressed as siamese twins.
"It was so fun, until we fell and could not really get back up," she said.
April Opoien, 2009 Junior First Citizen:
"My favorite Halloween memory was of the Halloween carnivals we used to have in elementary school inside the gym with game booths and candy. It was super fun to play those games and get dressed up and be with your friends. You could show off your costumes without freezing. We lived in a rural community so trick-or-treating was kind of difficult."
She remembers dressing up as a cheerleader in junior high school.
"As an adult, I was the tin man at an office Wizard of Oz themed party," Opoien said. "It was fun to be creative and put that costume together."
Shelly Garrett, Lebanon Chamber of Commerce executive director:
"Our first year in Lebanon, my son was 4 years old. He was really excited about trick-or-treating, but we live on a farm in the country, so it's not very practical for going door-to-door. Add to that the storm of the century - at least for us: We'd never seen rain like this before! -that washed out our driveway!"
Garrett did not want to disappoint her son, so loaded herself, her husband, her mom and son into a car and drove in the flood to the only person she knew: The contractor who built her house, Mike and Cindy Wells.
"They made a huge deal of ringing the doorbell and candy request so he could experience the Halloween tradition," Garrett said.
Afterward, the family went to the harvest festival at the Nazarene Church.
