The Lebanon Community Chorus will perform a classical winter concert featuring Joseph Haydn's Missa Tempore Belli at 7 p.m. on on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on South Main Road in Lebanon.
The second half of the program will include lighter seasonal selections.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students with identification, and $20 for families, and are available from chorus members, at Stainthorp's Music in Lebanon, and at the door.
For this concert, the chorus is under the direction of Kevin Wong, who also directs the vocal music program at Lebanon High School. Wong chose the Haydn mass as a piece that would challenge the group, yet be accessible. It is extroverted and powerful; a complex choral piece accompanied by a string quartet. Another name of this mass is "Mass in Time of War" because it was written in 1796 and performed as Napoleon was marching on Vienna.
The four soloists will be Evelyn Smith, soprano; Colleen Rydholm, alto; Pete Butler, tenor; and Brent Dunigan, bass.
This is Wong's third concert as a director of the chorus. He enjoys being part of art in the community, as well as having the opportunity to work with adult singers, whose life experiences enable them to bring a different expression to the music.
He studied vocal music at the University of Oregon and received his masters in Music Education in 2006. He has sung with the Corvallis Repertory Singers, the City of Eugene Concert Choir, the University Singers, the Eugene Symphony Chorus, and the Oregon Bach Festival Choral.
As director of the high school choirs, he has brought many more young voices into the performances of the chorus.
Last spring the chorus was granted non-profit status by the IRS. All donations are now tax-deductible. This fall the board of directors initiated an annual fundraising drive asking people to become patrons of the chorus.
In addition, the chorus is looking for sponsors to cover the cost of the professional string quartet accompanying the mass.
Anyone wishing to contribute as a patron or sponsor may contact Carol Sedlacek, the president, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Lebanon, 451-1159.
On April 20, the chorus will perform the spring pops concert as a benefit to a local organization yet to be decided.
