The family of Samantha Stephens has established a scholarship in her name. Stephens, a 2004 Strawberry Festival princess, was killed at the age of 21 when a passenger on a motorcycle that wrecked in August 2007 south of Lebanon.
Application is by essay on how the $500 scholarship will help you attend college. Applications should be sent to Todd Gestrin at Key Bank by May 27. They may be delivered in person at 95 E. Sherman St. or mailed to P.O. Box 548, Lebanon OR 97355.
The scholarship is aimed at Lebanon students who plan to attend Western Oregon University in Monmouth, where Stephens was a student majoring in psychology and minoring in dance. Need will be the primary criteria.
"When you go to graduation a lot of the scholarships are given to the same children. We would like to give this to a working student paying most of their own way."
The scholarship is set up to continue at $500 a year.
"Samantha was a special girl and touched so many lives there were over 600 people at her service," said her mother Kathy Norris. "Everyone there said you met her once and she changed or touched your life. There are over 250 stars 'in Memory of Samantha Stephens' car stickers driving around town."
Norris said a friend named at star for Samantha on the International Star Registry. It is in the Andromeda constellation that shines over Oregon in the summer.
"Coincidentally, Andromeda stands for princess," she said.
