About a week after a fire ravaged the former Champion Mill site near River Drive, fire investigators do not have the cause of the fire pinned down. Fire officials say investigators may never determine the cause of the fire due to the extent of the damage.

The blaze on Oct. 6 destroyed a 200,000-square-foot vacant building at an estimated loss of about $2.7 million. A few small flare-ups were reported the day after the fire, but the incidents were "nothing extravagant," said Lebanon Fire chief Dan Woodson.

Lebanon Fire Marshal Mark Wilson and the state fire marshal's office are investigating the fire. The owner of the building, Lebanon Hardboard LLC, is insured.

The emergency call came in at about 7 a.m. on Oct. 6 and was immediately upgraded to a third-alarm fire. Personnel from Brownsville, Scio, Albany, Sweet Home, Halsey, Shedd and Corvallis fire departments helped put out the flames and stood by in case Lebanon received any other emergency calls during that time. Woodson estimates about 17 emergency vehicles and 40 personnel responded to the mill site.

No one was injured during the blaze.
