Two people who have spent time staying at the Gill's Landing RV Park asked the City Council last week to consider a senior and/or disabled vet discount for overnight stays at the park.

Guy Sample, now a resident of Lebanon, also expressed concern that a rumored fee increase would be made by staff and "rubber stamped" by the council.

"There's no facilities there that warrant a price increase," he said.

Samples and Billy Grubbs, a former Lebanon resident who has been staying a Gill's Landing while deciding whether to move back to town, said most other RV parks they've visited have discounts for seniors and disabled vets.

Grubbs also complained about the $6 processing fee, which he said is charged every time people go to City Hall to buy permits to stay at the park.

City Administrator John Hitt explained that the processing fee is charged only in two circumstances: when someone staying less than 10 days buys a park permit at City Hall and when someone stays 10 days or more. Someone paying for less than 10 days may use a payment envelope at the park and put it in the box provided or may give it to the park host. Anyone staying more than 10 days may go to city hall and buy a longer term permit and pay just one processing fee rather than paying for a new permit every 10 days.

Hitt said the RV park was designed for short visits; stays of as long as 60 days are allowed but discouraged in the summer.

City Councilor Ray Weldon said the council needs to be careful in setting rates because it competes with private businesses.

"If we cut the rates too much, the private park owners are on us," he said.

Fees are supposed to be about equal to other RV parks in the area, both public and private, Hitt said.

Mayor Ken Toombs said the council will make decisions on updating city fees after a public hearing on Nov. 12.
