Joe Raia, president of the Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce since November 16 and a self-described &#8220positive person," presented an upbeat picture of the future at the organization's January forum lunch on Friday.

&#8220I like to take negative attitudes and make them positive," he said.

Raia said he will be visible in the community.

&#8220Showing up is nine-tenths of the issue. I believe in showing up," he said. Beyond that, he pledged to be an advocate for members and &#8220make things happen to the extent that I can."

New membership is vital to the organization, he said, as he had about 10 new members who were present stand up to be recognized. He wants all members to be more involved, not just pay dues.

&#8220The more you bring to the table, the more there is on the table," he said.

Members may volunteer for these committees: economic development, education, governmental affairs, tourism, fundraising, ambassadors and communications.

Asked about the benefits of membership in the Chamber to small businesses, Raia said it is a place for them to build relationships and networks that will help them grow, which is necessary for survival.

&#8220If you stand still while everyone else moves forward, you fall behind," he said. &#8220It's not 1965 anymore. You can't think like 1965 any more."

Also, he said, the input of small business people is essential. Members influence Chamber and community issues by working with others.

&#8220I don't like to leave anyone out," he said.

Raia is looking for additional sources of revenue so the Chamber can do things for the community and he plans to make sure all Chamber-sponsored activities are in the black.

&#8220We shouldn't lose money on any event," he said.

A new Chamber website, now in development, will be an excellent place to put your advertising banner, he told those who were present.

He wants to hear from all members with fundraising ideas and suggested one himself - soccer tournaments that would bring kids and their families into the community.

Upcoming Chamber events include the annual banquet on Feb. 28, the first Women in Business luncheon on March 13 and Casino Night on March 16.
