Joseph Williams, 48, of Lebanon, was in fair condition at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center Monday afternoon following a one-vehicle accident earlier in the day.

Williams was southbound on Central Avenue, when he failed to negotiate the curve as Central becomes Rock Hill Drive. He crossed the opposing lane of travel, clipped a guardrail and hit a nearby tree. He was alone in the vehicle.

Sgt. James Welch of the Linn County Sheriff's office said Williams told the deputy at the scene that he didn't know what happened. There was no evidence that Welch was impaired.

Williams was pinned in his full-size 2000 Chevrolet pick-up. Medics used the Jaws of Life to gain access to him, said Fire Chief Perry Palmer. They transported him by ambulance to the parking lot north of the old Crowfoot School gym, where he was put on a REACH helicopter and taken to the Corvallis hospital.

The empty parking lot provided a firm landing area without obstructions, Palmer said.
