Eleven Lebanon High School graduating seniors shared the spotlight in Heath Stadium last night, speaking to their classmates as this year's valedictorians and salutatorians. Also on stage were principal Ken Ray, school board chair Sherrie Sprenger and senior senators who coordinated this year's graduation ceremony activities.
Ranking highest in their graduating class with a perfect 4.0 grade point average are valedictorians Michael Barish, Thomas Evans, Alysia Furman, Wyatt King, Ali Krebs, Amanda Masog, Yuriy Mikitchenko, Claire Nauman and Grace Nauman. Salutatorians are Taylor Verna Overbeck and Jessica Silva.
Alysia Furman
Alysia Furman, daughter of Scott Furman and the late Kathrine Doherty, graduated from the Social Systems Academy at LHS. She was active during the past four years in soccer, equestrian team, STARS, drama, Associated Student Body, National Honor Society and Key Club. She was named Junior First Citizen, Junior Rotarian and Youth Optimist. In addition to school activities, Furman participated in blood drives, worked at the Soup Kitchen, rang bells for the Salvation Army and helped in highway and beach clean-ups. She works as a barn manager and plans to attend Oregon State University to earn a master's degree in mathematics, with an eye to getting a teaching certificate in high school math.
Michael Barish
Michael Barish was part of the Living Systems Academy. He participated in varsity soccer and National Honor Society. He was named to the All-League soccer team, and was named Most Valuable Player by his teammates. He served as a coach at the Boys & Girls Club and works at the Oregon State University Forestry Lab. The son of William Barish and Carol Chervenak, he plans to attend Bowdoin College in Maine, looking at a career in medicine.
Thomas Evans
Thomas Evans is the son of Richard and Claudia Evans. Although he isn't ready to make a career commitment yet, he will attend Brigham Young University in Utah, taking two years off to serve a mission for his church. While in the LHS Social Systems Academy, he participated in soccer, band, STARS, National Honor Society and Boy Scouts. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout, All Conference, and Honor Team in math. He works as a referee for the Boys & Girls Club.
Yuriy Mikitchenko
Yuriy Mikitchenko, son of Peter and Valentina Mikitchenko, works as a cashier at Wal-Mart. He plans to attend Linn-Benton Community College in September before transferring to a university to pursue a career as a director in the film industry. He created LHS's first live video announcement program, “Smoke Signals News." He attended the Social Systems Academy.
Amanda Masog
Amanda Masog graduated from the Social Systems Academy, and plans to attend Oregon State University in the fall. The daughter of Duane and Berlita Masog, she wants to major in science or pharmacy, with a career goal of being a pharmacist or optometrist. She participated in sports during her years at LHS, including soccer, basketball and softball. She was a member of the National Honor Society and STARS. She was named sophomore Athlete of the Year, achieved perfect attendance, and was given an honorable mention in soccer awards. She served as Key Club vice-president and is a 2007 Strawberry Festival princess.
Ali Krebs
Ali Krebs attended the Social Systems Academy at LHS. She participated in cheerleading, volleyball, band, drama, musical theater, and was awarded the Bill Gamble Service Award, the Selfless Service Award, and was an all-league selection in volleyball and a member of the 2007 Strawberry Festival Court. She volunteers at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She is the daughter of Tracy and Terri Krebs and plans to attend Linn-Benton Community College. She wants to major in health education and promotion with a minor in Spanish, with hopes of becoming a high school health teacher.
Wyatt King
Wyatt King, son of Jeff and Edda King, graduated from the Social Systems Academy at LHS. He will attend Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon. He is a three-sport varsity letter winner, and participated in STARS and National Honor Society. In his spare time, he volunteered at the Lebanon Soup Kitchen.
Claire Nauman
Claire Nauman will enter Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall, with a goal of a career as a medical doctor or American president. During her years in the Social Systems Academy at LHS, she participated in band, drama, tennis, soccer, poetry club, and National Honor Society. She was awarded Outstanding Citizenship Award for 2003-04 school year, was Siemens-Westinghouse national semifinalist last year, and was third at the State Improvisational Festival in 2005. She earned three varsity tennis letters, three in drama and four in band. She is the daughter of Ralph Nauman and Bethany Nauman, and is a member of Lebanon's First Presbyterian Church choir and the Community Chorus.
Grace Nauman
National Merit finalist Grace Nauman, also the daughter of Ralph Nauman and Bethany Nauman, studied in the Social Systems Academy at LHS. She will attend Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, working for a doctorate in English and minoring in music or technical theater. She is planning on a career as an English professor while staying involved in the performing arts. She was a Siemens-Westinghouse Regional Semi-Finalist, and participated as president of Drama Club, in band and poetry club. She was a member of National Honor Society, Lebanon Community Chorus and Students for World Awareness.
Taylor Verna Overbeck
Taylor Verna Overbeck is the daughter of Bruce Overbeck and Beverly Verna. She was in the Social Systems Academy and co-editor of the LHS newspaper, the Warrior Spirit. She participated in varsity tennis, the National Honor Society, and poetry club, and played in a wind ensemble. She was named as a Scholar Athletic and earned Honorable Mention at the Fall Press Day at Oregon State University. She plans to attend the University of Oregon and is enrolled in the Society of College Scholars. She is interested in pursuing a career in international relations. After school, she volunteers at Heartland Humane Society.
Jessica Silva
Jessica Silva, daughter of Steve and Vicki Silva, attended the Social Systems Academy. She will enroll at Cornerstone School of Ministry next year, then work toward a sociology degree at Biola University. She would like to own a non-profit business and have a career as an obstetric gynecologist. She was named Junior Rotarian last year, and was a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, and the yearbook staff. She volunteered regularly at the Pregnancy Alternatives Center, and was a youth leader at her church and on the mission organization committee there. She works as a bakery clerk at Roth's Fresh Markets.
