A large debris pile fire near Vaughn Lane and South Fifth Street burned Nov. 3 despite heavy rain and 5,000 gallons of water from a fire truck and rekindled about 12 hours later.
The Lebanon Fire District was first called to the blaze - the wreckage of an old two-story structure that had been torn down some time ago - shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday. Firefighters put water on the fire and attempted to reach representatives of the property owner, Fifth Street Trust, of Albany.
At 1:15 a.m. Friday morning a Lebanon police officer noticed the pile had erupted in flames again. Firefighters responded and watched for about an hour as it burned itself down. By the time crews arrived it was dying down, said Fire Marshal Mark Wilson. There were no other structures nearby and the ground was wet enough the fire wouldn't spread.
Wilson said the fire was a prohibited burn of suspicious origin. DEQ will be notified because it involved materials prohibited for burning.
The company that owns the property is working with the fire department on cleaning it up, he said.
