A 21-year-old Lebanon man died on Seven Mile Lane, near the I-5 overpass, on Jan. 23.
Joseph Dale Roles, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Hartley Brian Montgomery, 27, of Lebanon, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis. As
of Monday afternoon, Montgomery was still at the Corvallis hospital in stable condition.
According to a report from the Linn County Sheriff's Office, at about 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 a deputy on routine patrol clocked the 1993 Honda Civic driven by Roles traveling at 73 miles per hour. Roles and the deputy were traveling toward each other on Seven Mile Lane, a 55-mph zone, when the radar reading was taken. The deputy turned around to stop the vehicle and the Honda increased its speed. As the deputy continued westbound on Seven Mile Lane, over the I-5 overpass, he found the vehicle, which had left the roadway and crashed into a parked Chevy truck.
The deputy gave first aid while the Albany and Tangent Fire Departments responded to the scene. Lebanon Police also assisted at the scene.
The investigation revealed that both occupants were wearing seat belts and that Roles had a suspended driver's license.
