Event benefits Scroggin Mill rural heritage

A fundraiser benefiting the non-profit group Scroggins Mill Rural Heritage will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 30 at the American Legion. The organization is dedicated to turning the Scroggin building at Fourth and Sherman streets into a public museum.

Prime rib will be served and the cost is $10 per plate. Door prizes will be awarded and information on the organization and the mill's history will be available at the event.

In April, Linn County commissioners presented the group with a deed to the building. The land the mill sits on is owned by Union Pacific and organizers are in the process of negotiating a lease with the company.

Several grants have been applied for, said President Ray Weldon, although they are still waiting on replies. The grants would help restore an old historic box car which is housed inside the building, as well as renovate the building for public use.
