The winter holiday season can be a time of peace and joy that can be shattered in an instant if you or your family become victims of a crime. There are several things each of us can do to reduce the risk of becoming a holiday crime statistic:

Don't be careless. Stay alert to your surroundings. Don't overload yourself with packages.

Shop with a friend, especially after dark.

Take only the credit cards you intend to use and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Know where your purse or wallet is at all times.

Report suspicious activity and thefts immediately. Contact credit card issuing companies to report a lost, stolen, or misused card immediately. Keep a list of credit card numbers and banking information stored safely at home or in a safe deposit box.

Park in well lit areas and store valuable belongings and packages in the trunk.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office Community Service Specialists are available to share these tips and other personal safety tips with your neighborhood, community, or service group. Contact Cathy at 258-6940 or Jo Ann at 259-6126 for information.
