The Lebanon Boys & Girls Club announced Monday that it is receiving grants from both Weyerhaeuser Company and Safeway foundations.

The Weyerhaeuser Foundation award of $5,000 will be utilized to provide scholarship support for youth members unable to pay the $20 membership fee; to purchase equipment, supplies and incentives for the After School Program; and to provide training for program staff members.

The After School Program is the club's fundamental program, offering activities in the five core areas of character and leadership development; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; and sports, fitness and recreation. Programs are offered at both the main Clubhouse and the Seven Oak Middle School sites on all school days, with an average daily attendance of 220.

The Safeway Foundation recognized the club with a gift in support of the Club's flagship After School Program. Steve Vanderhoof, manager of the Lebanon Safeway Store, recently presented the check, in the amount of $2,731.79 on behalf of the Foundation's Connect Together campaign. Connect Together is designed to urge parents to connect with their children over meals and activities in order to build stronger families and communities.

The club intends to use the funds in the homework help and tutoring program, POWER HOUR, and supplementary high yield learning activities offered throughout the After School Program. Time spent in POWER HOUR enables club members to develop the daily habit of completing homework and preparing for class in a safe, quiet, allocated space with staff and volunteer encouragement and assistance. High yield learning activities help young people see the practical application of lessons taught in the classroom.

All Boys & Girls Club programs are based on a youth development strategy that builds self-confidence and self-esteem and fosters a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness and influence.

The club is located at 305 South Fifth Street in Lebanon. For more information, call 258-7105.
