Paul Aziz of Lebanon learned firsthand just how bad the economy is when he was laid off from Peak Internet in Corvallis two weeks ago. Although some might have been demoralized by such a downturn in their economic fortunes, Aziz saw it as an opportunity to start his own computer repair business, Paul's Computer Services.

"A layoff can be devastating to someone who is supporting a family and counting on the income and benefits," Aziz said, "but you have to make a plan and move forward. Sitting around and having a pity party doesn't do any good."

Aziz worked for Lebanon-based ValNet doing technical support and computer repair starting in in 2004. He eventually became ValNet's lead computer repair technician. ValNet was sold to Peak Internet in 2006.

Peak closed the Lebanon repair shop last year after he began working out of the Corvallis office, Aziz said

"Customers still called the (Lebanon) office looking for me to ask if I would do their computer repair on the side," he said.

Because his work didn't leave him much spare time, Aziz had to turn them down. But the idea of one day opening a repair shop began to form. During the past year he had drawn up a business plan, so when he was laid off he knew what he had to do: gain back that following of loyal customers from his ValNet days.

Former ValNet owner Duston Denver praised Aziz's knowledge and work ethic. "Not only does he have the patience to teach computer classes at LBCC, but he has the patience to make sure computers get fixed the right way the first time," Denver said. "I would recommend Paul to anyone needing a computer fixed."

Aziz, who has taught at Linn-Benton Community College for the past eight years, currently teaches introductory computer and digital photography classes at LBCC's Lebanon and Sweet Home campuses.

To keep overhead low, Aziz is starting Paul's Computer Services out of his home at 312 E. Sherman St. Because he uses a wheelchair, office manager Dawn Sutherland will be picking up and delivering computers for customers who are unable to bring their machines in for repair.

"I know there is a big need for repair services here in the Lebanon area," Aziz said. "I'm hoping the community will support this local business."

Paul's Computer Services is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on weekends by appointment. Aziz may be contacted at 570-1632 (local call). More information is on the web at www.paulrepair.com.
